Brides are taking extreme measures to lose a few pounds before their big day, but at what cost?
How far would you go to lose 10-20 pounds? Especially when you know it won’t stay off and you will gain it all back once you eat normally again? There are many extreme diets out there that drastically cut calories to achieve quick weight loss. The latest diet trend, however, is geared towards brides-to-be. Some women are choosing an extreme weight loss method to lose weight for their wedding day.
KEN: The Latest Extreme Diet
The KEN Diet or Ketogenic External Nutrition Diet is the newest weight loss craze, having originated in Italy, it is just now being marketed to women in the U.S. Like many of the other extreme diets out there, it is based on calorie restriction. However, this diet take it to the next level by not allowing you to eat any food whatsoever for 10 days.
Here’s how it works: A feeding tube is inserted through the nose and threaded to the stomach. A liquid solution is pumped into your stomach, delivering 800 calories worth of proteins, fats and water. It is includes no carbs. What this does is it forced your body into starvation mode and you reach ketosis where your body uses stored body fat as fuel rather the your daily calories. This allows for quick weight loss.
Does the Feeding Tube Diet Work?
The short answer is yes. You can lose weight over the 10-day span of the KEN diet. While it may not seem as extreme as other surgical option for weight loss and doesn’t require a hospital stay, it does require close supervision from a trained professional and it does come with side effects, which can include:
- Erodes tissue of the nose and throat
- Insertion trauma
- Bad breath
- Lung Infection
- Kidney failure
- Septum damage
- GI bleeding
- Scarred esophagus
Aside from these risk factors and the fact that the feeding tube diet has not been FDA approved, the weight will only come off while on the 10-day plan. Once a round has been completed and you resume normal eating, the weight will immediately come back. It’s purpose it to give brides the opportunity to lose enough weight to look and feel beautiful in their wedding dress. The KEN diet is not a lifestyle change or intended as a long-term weight loss solution.
