There are different types of carbohydrates, which are found in various foods. One form of carbs is sugar, either naturally occurring or processed. Another carbohydrate is dietary fiber, which offers a number of health benefits including aiding in digestive function. The last type is the starchy carb, which is normally the type that people try to cut back on when eating healthy.

Healthy Carbs from Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are a great sources of healthy carbohydrates, as they are packed full of nutrients. Most vegetables and some fruit contain a high level of fiber, making them an excellent choice when eating carbs. Fruits and vegetables should be eaten throughout the day as part of a healthy diet. Leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, should be included in many meals to provide high amounts of dietary fiber.

While some fruit, like bananas, are high in natural sugar, there are fruit options that contain less sugar and more dietary fiber. One example of such a fruit is the apple. Apples make great snacks, especially mixed with all-natural nut butters.

Bread and pasta lovers don’t have to give up their favorite foods for the sake of their health. There are many whole grain options available now when shopping for pasta and bread. These healthy alternatives taste great, with some of the bread choices even cleverly disguised as white bread. While serving guidelines should be followed for these foods, it is considered healthy to include some whole grains in your meals each day.

A lot of types of snacks, or junk foods, are very high in carbohydrates. This causes people on healthy diets to need a bit of creativity when it comes to snack time. Chopped up fruits and vegetables always make a great snack choice. Fruit can even be dipped in natural nut butters to up the amount of fiber being consumed.

One fact that most people don’t realize is that popcorn is a whole grain. Popcorn can be popped as usual for a snack, and seasoned to taste. One good idea for popcorn seasoning is to sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top.

As long as you add healthy carbohydrates into each meal during the day, you will have energy and feel the benefits to your health. A treat that’s high in carbs is okay every now and then as long as you are following a healthy diet.
