A new study published in the journal SLEEP, reports that too little or too much sleep is apparently associated with higher incidence of belly fat. Participants in this study who slept less than five hours per night or more than eight hours per night, were associated with an increased body mass index and higher levels of fat, especially in the abdominal area.

Those who consumed on average about 2,224 calories each day and slept less than five hours a night engaged in less daily activity due to fatigue from lack of adequate rest. Those who slept six to seven hours per night and consumed an average of 1,920 calories each day and were more adequately rested, therefore leaving them more likely to engage in physical activity and exercise. This research suggests that less activity due to fatigue from too little sleep along with excess intake of daily calories may be the main reasons why some not adequately rested folks tend to be heavier in the belly.

Exercise to Get Rid of That Excess Belly Fat

Along with a controlled portion diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy items, and lean meat, exercise is the best way to get rid of that tummy. According to, a diet book titled The Flat Belly Diet contends that belly fat can be blasted away eating a 1,600-calorie diet rich in monounsaturated fats. But diet alone is not enough to target and get rid of belly fat.

It’s going to take exercise. The good news is that hundreds of crunches per day are not likely to flatten that stomach. Georgia State University nutrition professor, Christine Rosenbloom, PhD, RD states, “If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you must eat a healthy, controlled–calorie diet and get regular exercise – around 60 minutes a day of moderate activity, like brisk walking.”

Higher intensity exercise tends to burn abdominal fat faster. Just look around at the people who are doing this sort of high-intensity exercise every day and see if their abdomens are leaner.
