1 – When you can start exercising
When you understand that bariatric surgery is an invasive surgery then it becomes clear that you can’t do certain exercises right away. Your body needs time to heal so you can recover quickly and without any complications. Simple things like getting back to work and doing the shopping take a few days. To do anything more physically intense will require more time to recover.
Trying to do exercises too soon after the surgery will likely result in some problems in the area where the surgery took place. It can take a few months of downtime before you can do a proper workout. Within a couple of weeks, you may be able to start doing some walks while increasing the time gradually until you can walk for long periods.
2 – What types of exercise can be done?
When you are able to graduate from walking to another form of exercise it is important to do the types that are not going to have much of an impact on your recovery. This means that low-impact and non-strenuous activities are best.
Start by limiting yourself to ten or fifteen minutes per day of exercise such as doing steps or walking on a treadmill. As you heal then you can increase your exercise time and even the intensity of the exercises.
After a month or so after the surgery, you can then do some light stretches or some yoga. Resistance bands are a good workout that is low-impact and a good overall exercise for those with mobility issues.
3 – How much exercise should you do?
Once you are fully healed, you should make sure that daily exercise is part of your lifestyle. You can do as much as you like so don’t feel like there is an upper limit to how long you can work out. However, there is a minimum that you should make sure to hit each day.
Thirty minutes per day is a good goal to have. It doesn’t matter how intense the exercise is as long as you get it done.
