Certificates of Analysis

  • What is a Certificate of Analysis?
  • How do you know if the laboratory performing the analysis is credible?
  • How do I obtain a Certificate of Analysis from a dietary supplement manufacturer?

Certificates of Analysis are laboratory assays performed for dietary supplement manufacturers that attest to the purity and active ingredients in the supplement. A good rule of thumb to follow is that if a manufacturer of dietary supplements can supply a Certificate of Analysis, this often demonstrates their intent to sell only quality supplements. Certainly, there is abuse in this arena as well, since scientists can be bought and Certificates can be falsified.

According to Dr. Clark, a more scientific method to determine the potency and purity of any manufacturer's supplement is to ask the company for the methods used in their laboratory analysis so that the results can be duplicated in another laboratory.

If a manufacturer lists a Lot Number and Expiration Date on their product, this is a positive indication of quality control procedures, but again, it is not a guarantee of the purity of the dietary supplement.

We believe in thoroughly researching the manufacturer, their history, and current practices, to determine if they are a dietary supplement manufacturer who insists on quality and purity in their products.

On a practical level, we know this is confusing and not easily determined by the average consumer. We suggest you only purchase supplements from companies that have been referred to you by a credible source.

If you look on our DHEA pages, we were shocked to discover that out of 22 commercial brands of DHEA, only 2 companies had any biologically active DHEA in their formulas.

"Let the buyer beware," is a necessity in purchasing dietary supplements. Profits and greed are prevalent in the natural foods industry as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.

It is our hope to create an independent testing laboratory, similar to other industries, to ensure that consumers are buying safe and effective dietary supplements. Until then, check our "What's New" section for a list of manufacturers that HEALL endorses.

How do you know if the laboratory performing the analysis is credible?

Without a scientific background, this is not easily determined. You can ask your supplier, store or company owner, to conduct this type of research for you. We encourage you to ask more questions and insist that whatever the source of your supplements, that they take responsibility for your hard earned dollars to ensure that they are being wisely spent on a supplement.

How do I obtain a Certificate of Analysis from a dietary supplement manufacturer?

Ask. Some manufacturers supply a Certificate of Analysis with every shipment of product to the supplier. If your purchasing source does not have a Certificate of Analysis on file for each of the products they are selling you, don't buy from them.

Manufacturers addresses and phone numbers are often listen on the product packaging, so you can write a letter or telephone the company to ask for a Certificate of Analysis. By making more informed buying decisions you contribute to helping the less informed consumer, by exercising the power of your dollar. Don't buy dietary supplements from sources that are questionable. Ask your health food store or drug store to insist on obtaining Certificates of Analysis for all products they sell.
